Learn how to write more effective a cappella arrangements by learning about how to write for instruments and then translating that for vocals. It’s sort of goofball-ish to think about a cappella as just a vocal medium, when the voices are playing the same role as an instrumental ensemble, or an acoustic guitar, or anything in between; why start with the idea that you’re “just” arranging for voices? We’ll look at how different instruments and instrument families are voiced/written in different contexts, touching on both orchestral and big band approaches, for sure spending time on bass lines, and how different syllable choices work vis-a-vis orchestration practice.
